Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation (EKFS) and the State of Lower Saxony fund "Advanced Clinician Scientist" program

At the MHH, the new CORE100Pilot program is available for doctors who have completed their specialist training / The EKFS and the state of Lower Saxony are funding it with 500.000 euros each

In order to be able to provide patients with the best possible care based on the latest scientific findings, doctors must not only have excellent clinical training, but also excellent scientific training. However, it is often difficult to reconcile clinical research and the daily challenges at the bedside. To counteract this, the Hannover Medical School (MHH) now has a new program called "CORE100Pilot - Advanced Clinician Scientists". The program provides advanced doctors with specialist status with periods of time during which they can research and teach - supported by a structured scientific support program and targeted career counselling with the goal of academic independence. The thematic focus is on organ regeneration and replacement with an emphasis on transplantation, artificial organ support and regenerative medicine.

The program starts in spring 2021, lasts three years and is funded by the state of Lower Saxony within the framework of the Lower Saxony Pre-Award and by the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation with 500.000 euros each. So far, it is the only program at MHH that is aimed at researching physicians who have completed their specialist training, and thereby ideally expands the MHH options for career development under the roof of the Hannover Biomedical Research School.

Highly qualified physicians can take up to 50 per cent time off from their clinical obligations for research and teaching in the program and receive additional material funding. "In the program, doctors are supported in their clinical research by appropriate structures and direct funding to be able to conduct internationally recognised patient-oriented research in the field of organ regeneration and replacement," says Professor Axel Haverich, Head of Cardiothoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery, on whose initiative the program came into being. "Following the establishment of various clinician scientist programs for younger doctors in specialist training, this program is an excellent addition to our academic support for young scientists at the MHH," says Professor Reinhold Schmidt, Dean of the Hannover Biomedical Research School (HBRS) at the MHH.
