Study Peace in Osnabrück, the City of Peace - Master’s program “Conflict Studies and Peacebuilding”

Dr. Utz Lederbogen Stabsstelle Kommunikation und Marketing
Universität Osnabrück

Osnabrück.- Starting in the winter semester, Osnabrück University will be offering a new master’s program in “Conflict Studies and Peacebuilding“. The goal of this special program in Osnabrück – the City of Peace – is to equip our students with a broad understanding of the sociological theories and methods underlying peace and conflict studies and to familiarise them with practical approaches to peacebuilding. Applications are welcome from May 15th onwards. Further information is available at: www.zedf.uos.de/master_csp

The program examines the fundamental concepts, terminology and approaches used in peace, conflict and violence studies. Prof. Alexander de Juan, one of the program initiators, describes the program as follows: “Students will study the role of different conflict parties, the causes and dynamics of conflicts and violence, and examine the practices of conflict mediation and peacebuilding by international, state and non-state actors”.

During the program’s four semesters, students will study different political systems, institutions and societies. They will examine state-society relations as well as international and global contexts. They will study relationships of power and violence and the circumstances within which they arise. They will also learn how to use qualitative and quantitative methods in their analysis of specific conflicts or peace processes. “One key empirical focus is the study of violent intra-state conflicts such as civil wars,” adds Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schneckener, Director of the Center for Democracy and Peace Research at Osnabrück University.

A further integral part of the program entails giving students access to the knowledge and experience of everyday working life. Experts from various fields of practice will present their organisations and working practices in one of the program’s regular courses. Additional seminars will equip students with practical skills – for example in project management, in methods of program evaluation or in research-based policy consulting. Specialist teaching formats and an obligatory internship provide students with a structured insight into the practical contexts of conflict analysis, conflict regulation and peacebuilding.

As an English-language program, the Master of Arts (M.A.) appeals to students who are looking to pursue a career in an international context. In addition to preparing students for a career in research at universities and other institutions, the master’s program also prepares students for employment in government ministries, state agencies and international organisations. Graduates might find employment in the diplomatic service, in research-based policy consulting in foreign affairs, peace policy and development aid, or in projects dealing with conflict management, peacebuilding and development cooperation.
