New addition to the management of Fraunhofer IZM-ASSID, with a passion for glass

Susann Thoma Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Fraunhofer-Institut für Zuverlässigkeit und Mikrointegration IZM

In 2010, Fraunhofer IZM founded the Fraunhofer IZM-ASSID in Moritzburg, near Dresden, as an institutional site that complements the wafer level system integration activities in Berlin and involves international partners like Globalfoundries. Dr. Manuela Junghähnel started as the deputy department head and site manager in mid-April, representing the WLSI department at the Fraunhofer IZM-ASSID.

An expert in thin-layer, plasma and flexible glass technologies, Dr. Manuela Junghähnel is a familiar face in the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. From 1998 until she transitioned to the Fraunhofer IZM-ASSID in 2021, she worked at the Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP. She started there after successfully completing her studies in technical physics as an engineer for large-surface process and layer development on glass using magnetron sputtering. She then served as a research assistant, later as a group leader, and then finally headed up a department in S2S technologies & precision coating in the plasma technologies area. In addition, she coordinated flexible glass-related activities at the Fraunhofer FEP. In 2011, she received her Ph.D. at the Ilmenau University of Technology in the mechanical engineering department, writing on the topic of “Manufacturing and characterization of transparent electrically conductive thin TiO2:Nb layers through direct current and high-power impulse magnetron sputtering.”

Research on flexible glass is an important field that Dr. Junghähnel intends to add to the Fraunhofer IZM-ASSID’s areas of interest. “After working very intensively at the Fraunhofer FEP, I am now looking forward to new challenges at the Fraunhofer IZM-ASSID. I was particularly impressed by the close customer contact here with a large number of national and international industry partners. The location in Dresden offers remarkable technological possibilities for the 300 mm line. In the future, I plan to further expand direct technology transfer in this area.”

In addition to her experience in staff management, leadership in middle and upper management and in change processes, she also offers successful project and multi-project management expertise for industry and publicly funded projects. She has also been a member of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft Vintage Class since 2018, and is a member of many different boards and commitments (including being a member of the Committee of Displays and Lighting (DISL) of the Annual Conference of the IEEE Photonics Society – IPC since 2019, a member of the expert committee “Coating technologies for optical and electronic functionalization – FABF” of the EFDS since 2017 and a Board Member of the International Conference on Coatings on Glass and Plastics – ICCG.)

    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
