Two professors appointed to Chemnitz University of Technology by the President on May 15, 2021
Prof. Dr. Karin Leistner will take over the professorship of Electrochemical Sensors and Energy Storage at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Chemnitz University of Technology as of May 15, 2021.
Prof. Dr. Johannes Teichert will head the professorship of Organic Chemistry, also at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, starting on May 15, 2021.
The formal appointment by the President of Chemnitz University of Technology, Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier, will be made up at a later date due to the topical situation at the university.
About Prof. Dr. Karin Leistner
Karin Leistner studied materials science at the TU Dresden and at the École des Mines de Saint-Étienne. This was followed by a doctorate on the topic of "Electrodeposited hard magnetic Fe-Pt layers and Fe/Pt multilayers" at the TU Dresden, for which she received her doctorate "summa cum laude" in 2007. She then moved to the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research (IFW) Dresden as a research associate. In 2016, she conducted research on epitaxial electrodeposition of nanoscale transition metals for six months at the Physics Department of the Simon Fraser University in Burnaby/Vancouver (Canada). Subsequently, in 2017, she took over a research group on nanoelectrodeposition and magneto-ionics as a leader at IFW Dresden.
Karin Leistner conducts highly interdisciplinary research on new materials for efficient energy use. This includes, in particular, the electrochemical synthesis and modification of nanomaterials with special catalytic and magnetic properties. The focus of her activities is in the emerging research area of magneto-ionics, in which interfacial electrochemical reactions are exploited to control magnetic materials in an energy-efficient manner. This is a topical approach to reduce the energy consumption of magnetic storage devices in the IT sector and to develop new magneto-chemical sensor technology. She is working on this topic in two collaborative EU projects.
About Prof. Dr. Johannes Teichert
Johannes Teichert studied chemistry at Philipps-University Marburg and at Paul Sabatier University Toulouse. In Marburg he also graduated in 2006 with a diploma thesis on the topic: "Investigation of redox-active iron sandwich complexes and their application in catalysis." This was followed by a PhD under Ben L. Feringa, who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2016. Teichert submitted his dissertation on "Catalytic asymmetric synthesis of heterocycles" to the University of Groningen (Netherlands) in 2011.
This was followed by academic positions at ETH Zurich and TU Berlin. After starting his independent research, supported by a Liebig Fellowship of the Chemical Industry Fund at TU Berlin, in 2013, he took over the assistant professorship for Organic Chemistry and Sustainable Synthetic Chemistry there in 2016. Johannes Teichert was nominated for the Young Investigator Workshop of the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences. He was funded under the German Research Foundation’s Emmy Noether Program.
Among other things, Teichert's group researches and develops catalysts for synthesis chemistry with the aim of replacing waste-generating chemicals with hydrogen (H2). Another research topic turns to novel organic cage molecules for the development of conductive materials.
