Despite the increasing progress in vaccination, an end to the pandemic is not yet in sight. In the current research newsletter, researchers at the IfM Bonn explain why policy-makers should nevertheless already look beyond the crisis and refocus on a regulatory approach.
During the last months of the pandemic, Mittelstand policy was primarily aimed at mitigating the acute impact on the self-employed and entrepreneurs to limit the extent of the economic and social damage. The extent of the Corona crisis justified the concentration on sectoral and size-related measures, taking into account the "free-rider problem" or deadweight effects that always accompany them.
Mittelstand policy must not lose sight of the time "afterwards" - even if the end of the pandemic is not yet in sight. In the current research newsletter of the IfM Bonn, the researchers point out which Mittelstand policy measures can be used to support self-employed persons and enterprises so that they can embark on a sustainable business development based on renewal - and strengthen themselves for future crises.
