THE Young University Ranking 2021: University of Bayreuth among the 50 best young universities in the world

Christian Wißler Pressestelle
Universität Bayreuth

The University of Bayreuth is now considered one of the top 50 young universities worldwide. In the "Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Ranking" published today, it has moved up, compared to 2020, and is now sitting on 45th place. A total of 475 universities younger than 50 have been assessed this year – this is 60 more universities than last year. Tellingly, the THE ranking is one of the most respected university comparisons in the world.

The THE Young University Ranking, which is published every year, utilizes five evaluation categories: Teaching, Research, Citations, Internationality, and Knowledge Transfer with Business. In each of these categories, the University of Bayreuth was rated higher than in the previous year. The ranking therefore once again proves that it enjoys an excellent reputation internationally, in both teaching and research. The supervision and support of students and young academics, from the bachelor's to the master's programme to the doctoral experience, are excellent. Research productivity is high, and the University of Bayreuth is also very successful in attracting third-party funding.

The frequency with which publications by Bayreuth academics are cited shows that the University of Bayreuth has a strong global reach on the basis of research. As a young campus university, it has - as today's THE ranking also proves - a distinctive international profile. Cooperations with universities and research institutions abroad are just as important in this assessment as the growing number of students, teachers, and researchers who come to Bayreuth from abroad.

"The University of Bayreuth has succeeded in advancing to the top 50, even though THE Young University Ranking has never listed so many outstanding universities as this year. This is impressive proof that we, as a smaller campus university, can hold our own in the face of increasing international competition. Our interdisciplinary networked research foci, for example in African studies, polymer and colloid research, ecology and environmental research, and high-pressure geoscientific research, make an important contribution to this. But the numerous new, often English-language degree programmes that tie in with forward-looking developments in science, business, and society are obviously also strong plus points. With our MOOCs, generally accessible international online courses, launched a few months ago, we will continue to boost our international presence," says University President Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible.
