IFW scientist appointed Humboldt Scout

Dr. Carola Langer Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Leibniz-Institut für Festkörper- und Werkstoffforschung Dresden

Professor Dr. Jeroen van den Brink from the Institute of Theoretical Solid State Physics at IFW Dresden has been appointed Science Scout for Condensed Matter Theoretical Physics in the Humboldt Foundation's Henriette Herz Scouting Program.

This funding program, which was announced for the first time in May 2020, gives internationally networked scientists increased options in the competition for the best talents for their research. As a Scout, they can propose up to three excellent young researchers from abroad for a fellowship and thus expand their research team. In order to encourage the development of women in science in the spirit of Henriette Herz*, women scientists should be given preference in the selection process.

In this year's second round of the program, 99 applications were received from 47 institutions. Jeroen van den Brink is one of the 23 new Scouts for Science selected: "With this program, we can directly offer talented female physicists a very attractive position in a highly competitive field. I hope that this will enable us to attract more excellent female scientists to Dresden as a research location.”
Every year, the Humboldt Foundation intends to award up to 100 additional research fellowships in this way. The Henriette Herz Scouting Program is aimed at researchers at all career levels in all disciplines in Germany. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

*Henriette Julie Herz was a writer and owner of a literary salon in Berlin, where she and her husband organized events on scientific and literary issues. She was also a lifelong friend of Alexander von Humboldt. Against the customs of her time, she enjoyed a broad education.
