The workshop on "The Economic History of Poverty in Africa" marks the beginning of a series of biannual public workshops on African economic history. The event will open with an introductory lecture by Prof. Dr. Jan-Otmar Hesse. He is Chair of Economic & Social History at the University of Bayreuth and is responsible for the new DAAD Visiting Chair of "African Economic History" here. This will be followed by a panel discussion on the current state of and prospects for African economic history, as well as lectures on the economic history of poverty in West Africa. The speakers are the current DAAD guest lecturer Dr. George Bob-Milliar and his colleague Dr. Mariama Marciana Kuusaana from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi/Ghana.

"The DAAD-funded guest chair offers us the opportunity to better integrate two very successful areas of the University of Bayreuth - economic history and African studies. In particular, we wish to expand the courses offered at the University of Bayreuth to include topics from African economic and business history. This applies especially to the master's programmes in 'History & Economics', 'Global History', and 'Development Studies', but there will also be offerings for students of the bachelor's programmes in 'African Culture & Society', 'International Economics & Development', and 'Philosophy & Economics'," says Prof. Dr. Jan-Otmar Hesse.
