Symposium: Fundamental questions in medicine and biotechnology

Eva Tritschler Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg

On Thursday and Friday, 2/3 September 2021, the digital symposium "New Roles for Ion Channels and Transporters in Health and Disease" will take place. The international symposium is organised by the British Physiological Society with the participation of Professor Mike Althaus from the Institute for Functional Gene Analytics at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS).

The transport of ions across cell membranes by means of tunnel proteins (ion channels) or transport proteins is the basis for the functioning of the human body. This creates electrical signals, for example, which nerve cells use for communication or muscle cells use for movement. "There is hardly a process in the human body that is not directly or indirectly connected to ion movements," says Althaus. His speciality is sodium-conducting ion channels in epithelial cells. Ion channels in epithelial cells are involved, for example, in the control of salt and water balance, food intake or the immune defence of the lungs.

The symposium brings together scientists from all over the world to discuss current research results in ion transport physiology and their biomedical implications in a total of 12 lectures and 30 short talks and poster presentations. It will also be exciting to take a look at the animal kingdom, where new insights into the functions of ion transport processes in various species offer great potential for biotechnological applications.

Registration (until 26 August 2021) is via the Physiological Society (link).

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
