Professor Francis Harvey of the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography will collaborate with historians at the University of Warsaw in developing graph databases over the next three years and participate in doctoral training at the history faculty.
Francis Harvey heads the research group „Data and Practices“ at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (Leibniz-Institut für Länderkunde, IfL) and is a Professor of Visual Communication in Geography at the University of Leipzig. In September, he assumed a visiting professorship at the University of Warsaw with support from the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) Chair Programme.
Together with an interdisciplinary team in the faculty of history, he will develop visual tools for analysing historical changes over the next three years. Graph databases will be used to analyse and visualise complex relationships between issues including spatial relationships. In addition, Professor Harvey will support talented young scientists with applications for fellowships at the IfL as well as prepare an application for an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC).
„Francis Harvey‘s call to a NAWA Chair at the University of Warsaw is not only an honour for him personally, but also underlines IfL‘s reputation as an internationally recognised research location,“ says IfL Director Sebastian Lentz. “The visiting professorship in Warsaw offers the IfL the opportunity to deepen its international cooperation with the Polish scientific community.”
The NAWA Chair Programme aims to involve renowned foreign scientists in the activities of Polish scientific institutions for a period of up to four years. Together with outstanding foreign experts, supported institutions are to develop innovative research and prepare further grant applications.
