Call for Proposals: Non-communicable diseases

Bianka Jerke Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung

The foundation Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung is making funding resources available
in the amount of 3,500,000 euros towards improving the health of people affected
by NCDs (non-communicable diseases) in developing countries (in accordance with
the OECD DAC list of countries).

Numbered within the group of non-communicable diseases are, for instance, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory illnesses and psychological disorders. Each year up to 40 million people die from such diseases in developing countries. Since 2015 they are regarded as the most frequent cause of death worldwide.

The goal of funding is to establish programs which are self-supporting on a long-term scale, that stand out due to a sustainable strengthening of healthcare staff and the local healthcare system, and improve the quality of and access to educational information, diagnosis and treatment of NCDs. The propositions can – but do not have to – build upon an existing project in place.

The following conditions must be fulfilled for application submission:

    • Total application volume between EUR 1.5m and 2.0m
    • Minimum program duration of 5 years, a term of up to 10 years is possible
    • Financing model involving declining deployment of funding over the course of the funding period, transition to self-reliant financing following expiration of the funding period
    • Cross-linkage to other relevant on-site stakeholders
    • Institutionalization of funding via the establishment of an Else Kröner Center
    • Accompanying scientific supervision and evaluation of the program

Eligible to apply are non-profit, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and institutes of higher education or university-level facilities from Germany which have been working successfully in close cooperation with local partners in the project country for several years and possess suitable organizational structures for a successful implementation.

In a first step it is being requested to submit a project outline up to 5 pages long. To be mapped out therein are the program objectives, including indicators thereof, the main activities, the thematic, chronological and financial project planning, as well as previous and existing cooperation in the project region, including disclosures regarding previous financial backers and fundings. At least one partner organization and a local person to contact in the project country must be stated. A confirmation from the local partner organization(s) regarding the intended cooperation along with a declaration of consent to the storage of data on the part of the person submitting the application must be enclosed. After a preliminary screening, the selected applicants shall be requested to submit full applications. The funding decision shall occur in the course of 2022.

The project outlines can be submitted to antrag-humanitaer@ekfs.de until March 31, 2022 in German or English in an electronic format.
