Opening of the HfK Musikkeller and Start of the Resonanzen Music Series

Things are about to get even more sonorous in Bremen. On April 28, 2022, the Hochschule für Künste (HfK) Bremen, Bremen’s University of the Arts, will ceremoniously open the Musikkeller, its newly designed event venue. The Musikkeller is located right in the center of the Hanseatic city. The evening will kick off with the opening event of the Resonanzen music series. The concert starts at 9:15 p.m. Tickets can be reserved in advance and are available at the box office (while supplies last) starting at 8:30 p.m.

"The extensive renovation has succeeded in creating a new, special venue to experience music. The dense, concentrated atmosphere and the closeness between musicians and audience – as known from the HfK-Jazzclub – is now available to all music genres represented at the HfK. In the future, the audience will be able to experience up close a wide range of musical expressions, from early music to electro-acoustic performances, from opera singing to piano concerts," said Professor Roland Lambrette, Rector of the HfK Bremen.

The authentic atmosphere of the vaulted cellar is complemented by custom interior design, which – from the stage to the seating – was created in the HfK's workshops. "The conversion has architecturally and technically created an ideal space for live music," said Professor Lambrette.

Gourmets will also get their money's worth. In conjunction with Mensa 13, the HfK's gastronomy in Dechanatstraße, a new place in Bremen has been created that combines musical and culinary delights. Mensa 13 is run by Jan-Phillip Iwersen and his team from the renowned Küche 13 – one of the best restaurants in the city.

Corresponding to the special nature of the Musikkeller, its reopening is being celebrated with the launch of a new music series.

Resonanzen, meaning the resonance of one body in the vibration of another body, is the title of the music series. "Without resonances, there is no music," said Professor Lambrette. The event format challenges familiar patterns and will take place once a month: A wide variety of styles will be presented in often unfamiliar surroundings. "You can experience a classical concert in an urban setting that is more reminiscent of a jazz club. That's very exciting. Of course, we also hope that musicians from different genres will inspire each other this way," said Professor Lambrette.

The concert will be opened by violinist Mechthild Karkow, professor of baroque violin and vice-rector for studies and teaching at the HfK Bremen. As a musician, she is considered one of the most versatile specialists in the field of historical performance practice. Her repertoire ranges from the end of the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century and includes contemporary compositions.

French pianist Lorenzo Soulès will present Claude Debussy's setting of Reflets dans l'eau from the piano piece collection Images. Soulès will also invite the audience on a musical journey to Spain with the work Triana of Iberia by Isaac Albéniz.

Soprano Alexandra von der Weth and pianist Artem Yasynskyy will present pieces by Franz Schubert, Richard Strauss and Hugo Wolf. Von der Weth is a German opera and concert singer and voice coach, and has been a visiting professor of voice at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen since November 2021. Artem Yasynskyy was born into a family of musicians in Donetsk, Ukraine. He gave his first concert at the age of eight. In 2010, Artem Yasynskyy began his postgraduate studies at the HfK with Professor Patrick O'Byrne, followed by a master's degree. He completed both with distinction.

The concert will be rounded off by jazz improvisations by Markus Schieferdecker, German bassist of Modern Creative Jazz, in dialogue with pianist Oliver Poppe. Schieferdecker has been a professor of jazz double bass and electric bass at the Hochschule für Künste, where Poppe also teaches, since 2020.

Tickets (while supplies last) are available on April 28, 2022, at the box office beginning at 8:30 pm. A binding registration vie email is possible: KBB-Musik@hfk-bremen.de. The opening ceremony begins at 9:15 pm. The ticket price for adults is 10 euros, the reduced price for students is 3 euros.
