AI-Based Text Analysis and Sustainable Security: ERC funds two TU Darmstadt Projects with ERC Advanced Grants

    Two stories of success for the Technical University of Darmstadt: The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded ERC Advanced Grants to two researchers from the Department of Computer Science at TU Darmstadt: Professor Iryna Gurevych and Professor Ahmad-Reza Sadeghi. Their research projects are to be funded with a total of five million euros.

    ERC Advanced Grants are awarded by the European Research Council to researchers from all disciplines. The target group for these grants are researchers with an outstanding scientific track record in their field. In the current round, 253 grants were awarded and 1735 applications were submitted.
    "InterText" project
    Over the next five years, Professor Iryna Gurevych's research project, InterText, will develop AI methods that enable the analysis of texts and their relationships to other pieces of text, considering contradictions, implicit references or comments. To achieve this, the project is creating novel methods based on the Deep Learning model known as the Transformer. These methods consider not only the actual texts, but also their structure, examining the titles, headings, chapters, and sections. Despite the overload of information ubiquitous in our society, this new technology is intended to efficiently and quickly provide users with a summary of complex information on a specific topic, for example, fact checking.

    “HYDRANOS" project
    By adopting a radically novel approach, the HYDRANOS project by Professor Ahmad-Reza Sadeghi aims to realise sustainable security for computer systems. For this purpose, security-critical components in the hardware, specifically in the system-on-chip (SoC), will be modelled and designed as reconfigurable units, while the other components remain static as usual. This allows the security-relevant units to be adapted and patched directly in the hardware, in particular to counter future attacks.

    The award winners
    Iryna Gurevych is the first-ever LOEWE Distinguished Chair in the state of Hesse, Vice President of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL), a founding member of the Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence (hessian.AI), as well as a W3 professor at the Department of Computer Science and founder and director of the Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing Lab at TU Darmstadt. She received her doctorate in computational linguistics from the University of Duisburg-Essen in 2001 and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the European Media Lab in Heidelberg. In 2006, she began working as a group leader and assistant professor at TU Darmstadt, becoming a W3 professor in 2009. Her work has earned her an Emmy Noether Junior Research Group and a Lichtenberg Professorship.

    Ahmad-Reza Sadeghi is Professor of Computer Science at TU Darmstadt and Head of the System Security Lab. Since 2012, he has established a long-term partnership with Intel that resulted in leading several collaborative research centres on various topics such as Secure Computing in Mobile and Embedded Systems, Autonomous and Resilient Systems and Private AI. He is also co-initiator and co-organiser of the world's largest hardware security competition HACK@Event. Professor Sadeghi has received several awards for his influential research in the field of information and computer security, and hardware-assisted security in particular: Karl Heinz Beckurts Award (2008), ACM SIGSAC Award (2018) and Intel Academic Leadership Award (2021). He received his doctorate in computer science with a focus on cryptography from Saarland University.
