Hochschule für Künste Bremen invites to the launch of the ship Dauerwelle

The Hochschule für Künste (HfK) Bremen is looking forward to its latest addition – the Dauerwelle. The converted passenger ship is a mobile space for exhibitions, projects and events. The ship's launch will take place on May 4, 2022, at 6 p.m. at the berth at Bürgermeister-Smidt-Brücke in Bremen – opposite the museum Weserburg. The number of places is limited. Admission is free.

The 53-meter-long ship has already taken up its berth in the center of Bremen in January 2022. Now follows the official launch, which will take place in a festive setting. In addition to speeches by Professor Roland Lambrette, Rector of the HfK, and Dr. Antje Stephan, Chancellor of the HfK, Tim Cordßen-Ryglewski, State Councillor at the Senator for Science and Ports, will also hold a welcoming address.

"I am sure that the Dauerwelle will become a special place where science, culture and society meet. The diversity of the Hochschule für Künste and Bremen's maritime tradition combine in the best possible way and can also be taken beyond Bremen's borders in full swing. I am enthusiastic about the idea and the successful implementation," said Cordßen-Ryglewski.

Asli Serbest, Professor of Temporary Buildings, has been instrumental in shaping the Dauerwelle project together with Mona Mahall, Professor of Architecture and Art at Hafen-City Universität Hamburg. Professor Serbest will provide insights into the history and concept of the Dauerwelle. Ingo Vetter, Professor of Sculpture with Classical Materials and Dean at HfK, will speak about the significance of the Dauerwelle for HfK but also for Bremen.

Peter Lilienthal, technical director of the HfK, will give opening remarks before the official launch. Lilienthal was co-responsible for the rebuilding of the Dauerwelle and accompanied the project with great commitment.

The program will be rounded off by music, performances, video projections and a sound installation by HfK students.

Under the title “Water” Carla Emilie Anacker will present a dance-based experiment that will take place on the deck of the ship. SUNMI Park will show “Wet Data”, an interactive cloud installation inside the ship, and Chi Him Chik will give an instrumental performance called “Into the SOUND”.

    Concept of using the ship

With the ship, the Hochschule für Künste has created a place that appeals to different publics and operates across social, aesthetic and technological contexts. "As a floating, nomadic space without solid ground, the ship is meant to facilitate new forms of coming together as a political and aesthetic impulse. It calls for new collective processes and different ways of making and perceiving things," said professors Serbest and Mahall regarding the concept. They understand the Dauerwelle as a late response to the utopian projects of radical architecture of the 1960s and 1970s – such as the designs for a Walking City or Nonstop City by the artist groups Archigram (Great Britain) and Archizoom Associati (Italy). They had conceived spaces, architectures, and even cities that were not tied to fixed locations, but were to be set in constant motion.

    Exhibitions and further planning

From May 20 to May 26, 2022, eight projects from the Digital Media master's program will be presented on the Dauerwelle. The exhibition "DIS/PLAY 22 - eight perms for a digital age" will expand and question concepts of digital media.

Subsequently, further exhibitions, concerts, lectures, discussions and project presentations are planned. The Dauerwelle will also repeatedly set sail and dock at other locations.

    Dauerwelle

The name Dauerwelle (English perm or continuing wave) refers to the flowing waters on which the ship moves; it also refers to the hairstyle and the feminist concept on which the project is based. It stands for a critical engagement with static institutional thinking, fixed spatial conditions and organizationally inflexible structures.

    About the ship

Built in 1962 at the shipyard Edgar André in Magdeburg, it belongs to a series of eight inland ships in the GDR named after famous literary figures. The Dauerwelle was called Heinrich Mann at the time. Since 2014, the ship was underway in Gelsenkirchen under the name Pirate. It was a location for techno parties. The HfK bought it on eBay and transferred it to the Kötter shipyard in Haren, Emsland, in November 2020. There the ship was overhauled and rebuilt. The final work took place at the Lankenauer Höft in Bremen.

About the Bremen University of the Arts / Hochschule für Künste Bremen (HfK)

The Hochschule für Künste Bremen is the leading art academy in Northwest Germany. With more than 1,000 students, 88 professors and 162 lecturers, the HfK Bremen offers a unique portfolio of courses and guarantees individual support for students in workshops, laboratories and studios as well as practice rooms and concert halls. The central quality of the HfK Bremen is the interdisciplinary connection of the different disciplines between art, design and music, which is developed in joint projects. The HfK Bremen has two locations, one in a historic warehouse building in the Überseestadt, the former docklands of Bremen, the other in a classicist building in the historic center of the city.
The university and its activities, ranging from exhibitions and interventions in public spaces to concerts and festivals, is a pillar of Bremen's cultural offerings (about 400 events at the HfK Bremen) and offers students many opportunities to test their skills in front of an audience.
As a historic Hanseatic city, Bremen has developed civic engagement, democratic traditions, idiosyncrasies and independence over centuries and is regarded in Germany as a pioneering and experimental city that is open to the new. Bremen is very popular among students as a place to live.
