At the international symposium "Dance Education in Transition", planned for 25 and 26 November 2022 in Munich and in digital form, the top figures in international ballet and dance education will exchange views on the future of professional education. Among those who have already confirmed their participation in the symposium are: Martin Schläpfer, Mavis Staines, Élisabeth Platel, Mariama Diagne. The symposium is an initiative of the Ballet Academy of the University of Music and Theatre Munich and the Dachverband Tanz Deutschland e. V..
“The future-oriented reform of professional ballet and dance education at universities is urgently needed: It is necessary to take a holistic view of the individuals, to train the students to become responsible partners within the community, to disaffiliate from traditional authoritarian pedagogical behavior and to commit to ethical principles.” With this statement, the curatorial team of the hybrid, international symposium “Dance Education in Transition” presented the program of the symposium today as part of a digital press conference.
The symposium will take place on November 25 and 26, 2022 as a hybrid event (in-person in Munich and online) and will be organized by the Ballet Academy of the University of Music and Theatre Munich (HMTM) in cooperation with the German Dance Association, (DTD).
The focus will be on the international exchange about the future of professional dance education. Over the course of two days, top representatives from international educational ballet and dance institutes will get together with professionals from the fields of education, medicine, science, theater as well as students and teachers to discuss and assess professional dance education at universities in the 21st century. They will not only examine the current reality, but also try to create visions for the future.
A number of renowned speakers and participants will take part in the various panels during the symposium, including: Martin Schläpfer (Wiener Staatsballett), Mavis Staines (Canada's National Ballet School), Élisabeth Platel (Ballet School of the Opéra national de Paris), Frédéric Olivieri (Ballet School of the Accademia Teatro alla Scala), Christopher Powney (Royal Ballet School/London), Julian MacKay (San Francisco Ballet) and from Germany Jason Beechey (Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden), Gigi Hyatt (Ballet School of the Hamburg Ballet), Nik Haffner (Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin (HZT)) and Dieter Heitkamp (Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts), Mariama Diagne (Society for Dance Research (gtf)) as well as Osiel Gouneo and Shale Wagman (Bayerisches Staatsballett).
In addition, the guests of honor include all three directors of the Munich ballet institutions: Laurent Hilaire (Bayerisches Staatsballet), Ivan Liška (Bayerisches Junior Ballett Munich) and Karl Alfred Schreiner (Ballett des Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz).

Symposium
Inextricably linked with present-day professional dance education are aspects such as psychological and dance medical care, nutritional consultation and scientific establishment, which are essential when entering the professional world. Dance, art and culture are increasingly understood as interdisciplinary entities and as part of a broader context again. The dance world itself has changed and thanks to a newly acquired mobility, it is more international and multicultural than ever before. This poses both an opportunity and a challenge for aspiring dancers: It is important to support them optimally in a formative phase of life and to prepare them for their professional reality.
Therefore, a central question will be: How can excellence not only be developed, but above all be preserved in the long term – thereby maintaining these unique artists’ both physical and mental health.

HMTM Ballet Academy
The Ballet Academy of the University of Music and Theatre Munich is the only state educational institution for professional stage dance in Bavaria and has been headed by Prof. Jan Broeckx since 2010. Every year the buildings on Wilhelmstraße in Munich are filled with 40 to 50 students of the bachelor degree course studying dance (over the course of three years) and around 70 younger students, who pursue their exceptional talent in ballet while they are still at school. The basis of the training is the Waganowa method, since October 2020, the pedagogical concept of the Ballet Academy, which focuses on a holistic perception of the young dancers, has formed the binding foundation of the entire educational work.
The Ballet Academy was founded in 1995 by Konstanze Vernon, the incomparable Munich-based ballerina and former director of the Bayerische Staatsballett. As a collaboration between the Ballet Academy, the Bayerische Staatsballett and the Heinz Bosl Foundation, the Bayerische Junior Ballett Munich is a significant interface to working in a professional company.
German Dance Association (Dachverband Tanz Deutschland e. V.)
The German Dance Association (DTD), founded in 2004 as the Ständige Konferenz Tanz has been working as a nationwide platform for artistic dance in Germany since 2006. Founded based on the awareness of the members that dance must speak with one voice in the political landscape of Germany, the DTD functions as a network of outstanding associations and institutions for artistic dance in Germany – across all aesthetic differences, diverse production methods and specific professional fields.
The DTD develops position papers and concepts for the promotion of dance in Germany, it realizes campaigns and initiatives and implements them in its projects. Since 2016, the association has participated in nationwide funding programs such as TANZPAKT Stadt-Land-Bund, Tanzland-Fonds für Gastspielkooperationen and Kreativ-Transfer. Since 2018, DTD has sponsored and organized the German Dance Award (Deutscher Tanzpreis). Since 2020, the association has been realizing the funding programs DIS-TANZEN, tanz:digital and DIS-TANZ-START (for graduates) as part of NEUSTART KULTUR. In addition, the DTD supports the Association of German Dance Archives in its ongoing cooperation and participates in the intensive discourse on issues pertaining to dance pedagogy. The German Dance Association maintains a close cooperation with the Society for Dance Research (gtf) and in 2019, the first round table on dance medicine took place.
The projects of the DTD are funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media, the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Cultural Foundation of the federal states as well as foundations, sponsors and donors.
