CIPSEM celebrates 45 years of international, transformative learning for sustainable development at TU Dresden

Anne-Stephanie Vetter Pressestelle
Technische Universität Dresden

On June 14, CIPSEM, the Centre for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management, celebrates its 45th anniversary with a ceremony in the Festive hall Dülferstraße of the TU Dresden with high-ranking guests from politics and science.
Since 1977, CIPSEM has been offering advanced training courses in the field of environmental management for international experts from the Global South.

Founded as the former East Germany's contribution to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and just five years after the first World Environment Conference in Stockholm, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, the creation of the centre with the support of UNESCO made TU Dresden a pioneer in the field of international environmental protection efforts.

Since reunification, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) has been supporting the TU Dresden, enabling international guests to take part in the four courses per year, which were also successfully held online during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The aim of the course program is to significantly accelerate the transformation process towards sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda and a lived global partnership, since all states and actors share responsibility.

The success of the program is also reflected in the fact that numerous alumni represent their countries at international environmental negotiations. At the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP26) in Glasgow in 2021, three former course participants were part of the Armenian delegation. Also among the CIPSEM alumni are a later environment minister of Armenia and the former heads of the national environmental authorities of Panama and Tanzania.

But CIPSEM also works on a small scale: At the celebration on June 14, Ms Subha Niranjan, who took part in the program in 2021, will present the transfer project she developed within this framework, in which schoolchildren in Bengaluru, India, now use a system for collecting rainwater in their school and hence have become less dependent on expensive water supplies.

Other guests include Mr Stephan Contius, Commissioner for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the BMUV, and representatives of numerous partner institutions such as the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), the Leibnitz Institute for Ecological Spatial Development (IOER) and the United Nations University in Dresden (UNU-FLORES).

The celebratory event on June 14, 2022 begins at 10:30 a.m. in the ballroom of the TU Dresden on Dülferstraße and will end with a panel discussion between alumni, politicians and scientists from 11:45 a.m. Media representatives are cordially invited to participate. After the official program, there will be an opportunity for talks and photos with CIPSEM alumni and staff from 12:30 p.m. The organizers look forward to receiving your registration by email to anna.goerner@tu-dresden.de.
