About computer architectures and the third dimension in microelectronics

Ralf-Peter Witzmann Stabsstelle Kommunikation und Marketing
Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg

On Friday, June 17, 2022, 11 a.m., Prof. Vijaykrishnan Narayanan, holder of the Robert Noll Chair in Computer Science and Engineering at Pennsylvania State University, will give a lecture on "Ferroelectric-based logic and memory architectures" at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg on the 7th floor of the IKMZ and via videostream.

This talk will cover circuit and architectural features that exploit the nonvolatile properties of ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FETs) for hardware obfuscation, accelerator designs, and in-memory computing structures.

Over the past decade, there have been major changes in the ferroelectric materials available for integration into memory electronics. So-called CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) memories offer the possibility to achieve high memory quality with many semiconductors in a small space and low power consumption.

In his talk, Prof. Vijaykrishnan Narayanan discusses the possibility of using the third dimension in microelectronics for functions beyond interconnect optimization. This enables 3D non-Von Neumann computer architectures to use ferroelectrics for local storage, in-memory logic, and digital and analog computation, as well as neuromorphic and reconfigurable functions. This approach circumvents the end of Moore's Law in 2D scaling, i.e., the doubling of computation and memory requirements at regular intervals, while overcoming the "von Neumann bottleneck" in transferring instructions and data between separate logic and memory circuits.

Interested parties are cordially invited to attend the technical lecture in English. For on-site participation, at the Information, Communication and Media Center (IKMZ) Cottbus, Foyer 7th upper floor,we kindly ask for registration by e-mail to: vp-forschung-transfer(at)b-tu.de,as space is limited.

In addition, participation via videostream is available without registration :https://b-tu.webex.com/b-tu/j.php?MTID=ma02c048f0ecf1f38965d76aed051bbb4

The speaker Vijaykrishnan Narayanan holds the Robert Noll Chair in Computer Science and Engineering at Pennsylvania State University. His research interests are in computer architecture, design with emerging technologies, and embedded systems. He was awarded the 2021 IEEE Computer Society Edward McCluskey Technical Achievement Award and the 2021 IEEECS TCVLSI Distinguished Research Award. He is deputy director of the DoE 3DFeM Center and an advance leader for the DARPA/SRC Center for Brain Inspired Computing. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, the ACM, and the National Academy of Inventors.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
