The role, failure and future prospects of national and international governance in the face of the war in Ukraine will be the subject of an English-language panel discussion at Leuphana University Lüneburg. The event, entitled "Russia's Ukraine War and Governance", will bring together renowned international experts on European security and governance, Russian-Western relations and Russian and Ukrainian politics on 24 June. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Elena Kropacheva, coordinator of the Master's programme Governance and Human Rights at the Professional School of Leuphana.
Despite an already emerging deterioration in Russian-Western relations and the Kremlin's questioning of territories and norms, despite changes in Russian foreign and domestic policy and the increasing military presence in the region, most political observers and decision-makers did not expect the outbreak of the first war in Europe since 1945.
How the war could have come about, which internal Russian political and normative structures made the so-called "special operation" possible, and how the war can be ended and a lasting peace in Ukraine and Europe achieved, are some of the questions that will be addressed in the discussion.
Participants in the discussion are: Prof. Michael Brzoska from the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy in Hamburg (IFSH), Dr Natasha Kuhrt from the War Studies Department at King's College London, Dr Evgeny Roshchin from the Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (IERES) at George Washington University and Dr Andreas Umland from the Stockholm Centre for Eastern European Studies (SCEEUS).
The event will begin at 6.30 pm. Registration via the website http://www.leuphana.de/gahr-podium-discussion is required for participation.
