New technology provides precise insights

Dr. Torsten Fischer Kommunikation und Medien
Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon

New highly automated fluorescence microscope provides researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon with faster capture of high-resolution images of living cells. The system is funded with 194,832.80 euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Modern technologies are needed to observe living cells and capture suitable images for analyzing the complex processes involved in their functioning. One example is the interaction of (stem) cells and materials. Processes such as stem cell differentiation - when stem cells transform into a wide variety of body cells - also require a detailed monitoring of the different changes occurring during such activities.

Scientific investigations of living cells are crucial for research at the Hereon-Institute of Active Polymers. The newly arrived live cell microscope provides the high-resolution images needed for this purpose. They capture the behaviour of cells over several days and are an important prerequisite for data processing with artificial intelligence.

"The live cell microscope will complement our research especially in the project on the dynamics of stem cell-biomaterial interaction", says Dr. Weiwei Wang, scientist at the Hereon-Institute of Active Polymers in Teltow. "The ability to obtain high-resolution image data from 2-D and 3-D samples so quickly and precisely supports our research processes enormously. In addition, live cell studies provide valuable data that can help us derive a deeper understanding of underlying mechanisms."

The new acquisition of the live cell microscope received an 80 percent grant of 194,832.80 euros from the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg; financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
