Mobile Robotics: University of Technology Nuremberg - First Course to Start in November

Konstanze Schön Kommunikation
Technische Universität Nürnberg

This digital course will serve as a model for future courses at the recently founded university. Anyone interested can apply on the website of the University of Technology Nuremberg for one of 25 places by October 20th.

NUREMBERG. Not even two years after its foundation, the University of Technology Nuremberg offers its first course. The digital course Mobile Robotics will commence on
November 14th, 2022. “The start of our first course is not only a milestone in the development of our teaching activities. It is also marks the progress we have made in the last few months in the founding process of the university as a whole”, Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Hans Jürgen Prömel is happy to point out.

Navigation of Mobile Robots as a Learning Goal

The course is addressed to anyone interested in the Master’s program Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, which will be launched at the University of Technology Nuremberg at the start of the winter semester 2023/2024. In the 8-week course, participants will have the opportunity to learn the basic methods of autonomous navigation with mobile robots. “After the eight weeks, graduates will be able to develop robotic systems which, based on data provided by their sensors, will be able to create a map of their surroundings and even assess their own relative position in it”, announces Prof. Dr. Wolfram Burgard, Founding Chair of the Department of Engineering and program coordinator for this course.

Prototype for the First Master’s Program

At the end of the course, a certificate is issued for the participants which can be recognized as credits in the Master’s Program Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. “The course is scheduled to give an insight in future topics of study. Furthermore, this digital course is to serve as a prototype for future courses and lectures at the University of Technology Nuremberg: Our aim is to present new teaching and learning methods and have them assessed by the participants in regular feedback sessions”, Prof. Dr. Isa Jahnke, Founding Vice President for Academic and International Affairs, explains. The digital course will start with a synchronous video conference introduction. This is followed by weekly asynchronous teaching activities based on videos, online discussion groups and tests which may be completed individually or as a group.

First Program to Start in the Winter Semester 2023/2024

The winter semester 2023/2024 will mark the start of lectures at the University of Technology Nuremberg - less than three years after its foundation. The first Master’s program Artificial Intelligence and Robotics will cover current issues from the field of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics such as deep learning, computer vision and data science. The course and lectures will be held in English. The program’s content, which is focussing on engineering topics, will be complemented by topics from liberal arts and sciences as well as ethical, philosophical and economic and business aspects. This shall ensure that students learn the responsible use of technology and can reflect the limitations of the current state of the art. Additionally, this research-oriented program is characterized by a new learning design, innovative formats and small study groups, while combining phases of remote-learning with physical attendance.

The University of Technology Nuremberg was founded on January 1st, 2021 and has been the first new foundation of a state-run university in Bavaria since 1978. With its consistently interdisciplinary approach, an innovative spectrum of subjects, new teaching methods and a future-oriented organizational structure, a model university will be created when it comes to teaching and research. The university is to have an international, interdisciplinary and digital approach. Upon completion, up to 6,000 students will be able to study on a campus embedded in the surrounding quarters.

    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
