Nobel Peace Prize 2022 highlights that “without people, there can be no peace”

ISDC - International Security and Development Center congratulates Ales Bialiatski, Memorial and the Center for Civil Liberties for being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2022.

Human rights are often taken for granted - but when they are actively violated, they provide the breeding ground for war. This has been shown by the Russian war against Ukraine and by developments in Belarus.

“Given the Russian invasion of Ukraine, selecting advocates for human rights from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine is an important signal that even in the most difficult of conditions, there are always individuals and organizations who will continue to fight for freedom, peace and democracy,” says Professor Tilman Brück, Founder and Director of ISDC. “Their contribution to peace is immeasurable and they are worthy winners of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.”

“Without people, there can be no peace,” comments Professor Brück.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded every year by the Norwegian Nobel Committee to individuals or organizations whose work has contributed to fraternity between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.

ISDC – International Security and Development Center is a non-profit academic institute based in Berlin, Germany. We conduct research to improve lives and livelihoods shaped by violent conflict, fragility, and humanitarian emergencies. We believe in the power of data and evidence for understanding and alleviating suffering around the world.

Professor Tilman Brück is a development economist and peace researcher in Berlin. He is the Founder and Director of ISDC - International Security and Development Center in Berlin, Professor at Humboldt-University of Berlin and Head of the Research Group “Economic Development and Food Security” at the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops. He is also the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Households in Conflict Network.
