THE Ranking 2023: University of Bayreuth among the best 20 percent worldwide in research and teaching

Christian Wißler Pressestelle
Universität Bayreuth

In "THE World University Rankings 2023", the University of Bayreuth ranks among the top 15 percent of universities worldwide in the area of "research" and among the top 20 percent in the areas of "teaching" and "industry income". It has been able to maintain these rankings despite the fact that international competition has once again intensified significantly: Compared to THE's 2022 ranking, the number of universities listed has increased by more than eight percent to nearly 1,800.

THE World University Ranking is published each year by Times Higher Education (THE), a British academic magazine. It is based on a variety of criteria, such as the ratio of lecturers to students, reputation in research and teaching, scientific publications by researchers and the amount of third-party funding obtained through cooperation with companies. The interdisciplinary THE ranking published today is based on data already collected in 2020. It also demonstrates the close integration of research and teaching and the successful commitment to young scientists at the University of Bayreuth: The number of doctoral students in relation to the number of bachelor students and the number of research assistants has increased significantly compared to the THE ranking 2022. Likewise, public funding for research projects has increased compared to the previous year's ranking.

"The University of Bayreuth's ranking among the world's top 15 percent in research shows that we address important global issues of the future in our interdisciplinary profile fields and generate knowledge that advances innovative developments in science, business and society – for example, in areas of energy systems, climate and environmental research, life sciences and artificial intelligence. In our German- and English-language degree programmes, students have the opportunity to contribute their own research ideas to current projects at an early stage. We want to further expand this interlinking of studies and research in the coming years," says Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible, President of the University of Bayreuth.

Until November 14, 2022, students can still enroll for the winter semester 2022/23 at the University of Bayreuth, for example in the new Bachelor's degree programmes "Sustainable Chemistry & Energy" and "Business Informatics" as well as in numerous other open-admission programmes.
