Awarded again: Leuphana is a role model for sustainability

Henning Zuehlsdorff Pressestelle
Leuphana Universität Lüneburg

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Commission for UNESCO today presented the "National Award - Education for Sustainable Development".

The project "Sustainable resonance spaces in the food industry" (NaReLe) of the work unit Vocational and Business Education at Leuphana University Lüneburg was honoured today (Friday) in Berlin with the "National Award - Education for Sustainable Development (BNE)". In cooperation with companies in the food industry, the project developed and tested learning tasks for use in sustainable vocational training for food technology specialists and anchored them in everyday work. The award was presented by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German UNESCO Commission to a total of 22 initiatives.

The Lüneburg project convinced the jury with its exemplary commitment to sustainability education and its special dedication to the Global Sustainability Goals of the United Nations. It is thus one of the innovative educational offers that enable learners to actively and responsibly participate in shaping a sustainable future.

The NaReLe project aims to contribute to integrating systemic, networked thinking and its application into training for the food industry with a view to sustainable development. Trainees and apprentices are to be enabled to integrate the sometimes contradictory demands of the operational environment into their decision-making processes in a meaningful way. In the context of sustainable development, this requires learners to be able to deal with problems that arise when taking into account economic, ecological and social requirements in everyday working life.

    Background
The "National Award - Education for Sustainable Development" recognises organisations, networks and municipalities that are committed to shaping a livable, sustainable society within the framework of UNESCO's ESD 2030 programme.
Education is central to sustainable development. It enables people to make decisions for the future and to assess how their own actions will affect future generations or life in other regions of the world.
The United Nations' 2030 Agenda sets the implementation of education for sustainable development as a goal for the global community.
