The University of Music and Theatre Munich (HMTM) is expanding its Chamber Music programme: it is currently the only music university in Germany to become a member of the European Chamber Music Academy (ECMA), thus linking its own programme to the international chamber music scene. Membership in the ECMA was initiated by Prof. Dirk Mommertz, Professor of Chamber Music at the HMTM, who is also the artistic director of the ECMA projects in Munich.
Following the appointment of Prof. Raphaël Merlin as Professor of String Chamber Music and Prof. Reto Bieri as Professor of Woodwind Chamber Music, the founding of the Ébène Quartet Academy, within the scope of which the Quatuor Ébène teaches the string quartets in the MA Chamber Music programme, and the appointment of Prof. Eberhard Feltz as Visiting Professor, membership in the ECMA is a further important component in creating an excellent chamber music training. The high standard of this training is reflected in the numerous prizes won by ensembles studying at the HMTM: for instance, both of the current first prize winners in the ARD International Music Competition, in the String Quartet and Piano Trio categories – the AOI Trio and the Barbican Quartet – are enrolled at the HMTM.
The ECMA is a programme run by leading European music universities in collaboration with different festivals, which has the aim of providing the best possible support for ensembles who are pursuing the path to a professional international career in chamber music. Chamber music ensembles from all over the world can apply for funding through ECMA. Programme participants who come from the HMTM have included the Arcis Saxophone Quartet and, currently, the Munich Tetra Brass ensemble. Every year, work phases with internationally acclaimed teachers are held at the participating member universities. The universities themselves can also invite further ensembles from their university to take part in these courses.
In Munich, the first ECMA Session is scheduled to be hosted in early May 2023 in collaboration with the Bavarian Music Academy Marktoberdorf, in conjunction with the HMTM’s “Chamber Music Days”.
