Internationally renowned academic and university manager Prof. Dr. Andreas Kaplan will be the new president of Kühne Logistics University (KLU). As of May, he will succeed Prof. Dr. Thomas Strothotte, who left KLU at the end of 2022 after serving two terms.
Prof. Kaplan, born in Munich in 1977, has acquired more than 15 years in leadership positions in the European higher education sector. Previously, he held the positions of Rector and Provost at ESCP Business School, Sorbonne Alliance, in charge of around 7,000 students, and more than 30 degree programs, across the school’s six locations in Paris, London, Madrid, Berlin, Turin, and Warsaw.
Kaplan's research focuses on the digital transformation of society, notably in the areas of social media, artificial intelligence, and virtual worlds. His publications have furthermore focused on the future of education in times of digitization, increasing international competition, and declining public funding.
The Acting President of KLU, Prof. Dr. Christian Barrot, congratulated Prof. Dr. Kaplan. "Professor Kaplan combines scientific excellence and a modern, communicative leadership style. In addition to his professional qualifications, he has convinced the faculty and academic senate with his personality. We are very much looking forward to working with him", he said.
Dr. Jörg Dräger, Executive Director of the Board of Trustees of the Kühne Foundation and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of KLU: "KLU is about to enter its next stage of development. We are convinced that Prof. Kaplan is the right candidate for the further development of KLU. With his experience managing international universities, he will provide important impetus for KLU's planned growth and further internationalization."
Prof. Dr. Andreas Kaplan said after the election, "I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all members of the academic senate, the entire university, and the Kühne Foundation for the trust they have placed in me. I am aware of the great responsibility associated with this position and look forward to the challenge of accompanying and shaping KLU in the next steps of its development. As the leading university for research and teaching in the fields of logistics and supply chain management, combining business and data science, KLU has tremendous potential."
Prof. Kaplan completed his habilitation at Sorbonne in Paris and previously earned his doctorate at the University of Cologne and HEC Paris. He holds a Master in Public Administration from École Nationale d'Administration (ENA) and a Master of Science in International Management from ESCP, after having studied business administration at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
The KLU Academic Senate unanimously elected Prof. Dr. Andreas Kaplan as the new President of KLU. He was nominated by the joint search committee of KLU and the Kühne Foundation, the university's sponsor.
