Jürgen Jost, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig, Germany, has been named an honorary doctor of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. The Academy recognizes his outstanding contribution to science and education in Vietnam.
In addition to his impressive scientific contributions, the Academy particularly recognizes Jürgen Jost's commitment to the creation of a culture of interdisciplinary thinking. Mathematical concepts and abstract structures are central tools for him to integrate knowledge across a wide range of scientific disciplines. Jürgen Jost received the honor in person at a ceremony in Hanoi.
In his laudation, Professor Hoang Xuan Phu of the Mathematical Institute of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology emphasizes Jürgen Jost's contribution in building up and raising the profile of the Academy in Vietnam. As Max Planck director and research group leader, he fostered a lively scientific exchange with Vietnamese scientists. He mentored numerous young researchers at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig. Recently, Jürgen Jost published more than ten articles and two books together with Vietnamese scientists. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Vietnam Journal of Mathematics.
Prof. Jürgen Jost has been Director of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig since its foundation in 1996 and Honorary Professor of the University of Leipzig since 1998. In addition, he is an external member and professor at the Santa Fe Institute for the Science of Complexity in the USA, as well as a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz, and the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities. His honors include the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and an ERC Advanced Grant of the European Research Council.
Jürgen Jost is the editor of a number of mathematical journals. He has published more than 20 monographs and about 500 scientific papers. In the course of his career, he has already supervised more than 60 PhD students and numerous postdocs.
