In 2023, TU Dresden once again holds excellent positions in the renowned "QS World University Rankings by Subject" in both German and global comparisons in several academic disciplines. TUD is ranked 97th worldwide in the subject area "Engineering and Technology" and is among the top 100 - as one of only five German universities. It also succeeded in three individual disciplines: "Materials Science" is ranked an outstanding 30th in the world, an improvement of nineteen places from the previous year. In "Mechanical Engineering", TUD is ranked 86th (2022: 93). "Electrical & Electronic Engineering" made the leap from 104th rank (2022) to the current 97th rank.
The QS Rankings show not only the worldwide comparison of 1,594 scientific institutions, but also the rankings of TU Dresden among the 60 universities evaluated in Germany.
TU Dresden ranked TOP 10 in twelve subjects, with Materials Science even ranking third.
For Prof. Gianaurelio Cuniberti, Chair of Materials Science and Nanotechnology at TUD since 2007, materials science is a true hidden champion in TUD’s research profile: “As a cross-sectional discipline, materials research is an essential pillar of our university’s excellent research strength, although it is sometimes not spotted at first sight.” This outstanding ranking position is a crucial contribution to the future economic development of not just Dresden but also Saxony and Germany as a whole. ”New materials are the key element shaping the future, because nearly 70% of all innovations depend on innovations in materials science. The materials of tomorrow, are laying the foundations for the technologies of the day after tomorrow e.g. in the semiconductor industry,” adds Prof. Cuniberti.
The other TOP 10 in Germany include several engineering subjects at TUD, architecture and landscape architecture, physics, chemistry, computer science and information systems, as well as forestry, psychology and mathematics.
The QS Rankings published by the British service provider Quacquarelli Symonds since 2011 are among the most prominent international rankings. The QS World University Rankings by Subject are published annually. The rankings are determined by specific factors including academic reputation, citations per faculty and employer reputation according to widespread global surveys of employers. The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023 comprise five subject areas with a total of 54 academic disciplines.
