Advancing green networks: Fraunhofer HHI launches testing facility F5G OpenLab

Martina Müller Pressestelle
Fraunhofer-Institut für Nachrichtentechnik, Heinrich-Hertz-Institut, HHI

The Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI) launched F5G OpenLab at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona on March 1st. F5G OpenLab is a novel testing and experimentation facility. Its objective is to make information and communication technologies (ICT) more sustainable by promoting optical-fiber-based Fifth Generation Fixed Networks (F5G). F5G OpenLab is located at Fraunhofer HHI in Berlin. It was created to advance the validation of technologies and solutions that were defined by the Industry Specification Group (ISG) F5G of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).

F5G OpenLab aims at gathering ICT demands and promoting fiber-to-the-X technologies, solutions and standards for application in vertical industries. F5G networks will converge fixed and mobile communication technologies to enable demanding applications, such as ultra-high definition video streaming, telemedicine, virtual reality gaming, and much more. They will increase the volume and types of fiber-connected devices, realizing a ‘fiber to everything’ setup. Using more fiber connections will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of digital technologies. Early studies show that fiber networks have the potential to be more energy efficient than e.g. 5G wireless networks. By advancing F5G networks, F5G OpenLab contributes to establishing green and sustainable future network solutions.

“We are entering a new era of communication, where fiber-based fixed networks will play an essential role, especially with their potential to reduce energy consumption (Green ICT) and co² emissions in vertical industries (ICT for Green),” states Prof. Ronald Freund, head of the “Photonics Networks and Systems” department at Fraunhofer HHI and F5G OpenLab project leader. “The next generation of fixed networks is needed to complement the 5G wireless network and support the growing number of cloud services requiring high bandwidth or low latency connections. By initiating F5G OpenLab, Fraunhofer HHI will contribute to enabling the green transition through ubiquitous fiber connectivity.”

F5G OpenLab is open for members from vertical industries who want to implement a digital and green business model. It provides access to the latest innovations in fiber networks. Members get the chance to access blueprint designs for networks and leverage the benefits of fiber technology for all segments. The project’s testing lab evaluates novel components, systems and network designs. It offers a vendor-neutral experimental environment and a co-working space for validating new optical and mobile network solutions with respect to their bandwidth, latency and cloud requirements.

Furthermore, the lab offers a unique ecosystem. Embedded in a Germany-wide cloud infrastructure of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, it provides access to a live industrial factory shop floor at Fraunhofer IPK (Berlin) and medical environments at Carl Thiem Hospital (Cottbus, Brandenburg). Here, members can develop and test solutions for the digital transformation and green network concepts and evolve them towards standardization (ETSI F5G use cases).

Lastly, F5G OpenLab provides experience sharing. Members get the opportunity to connect with professionals from standardization bodies, academia and industry. The goal is to foster industry collaboration and ecosystem development. Find more information on how to become a member below or get in contact with us.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
