Prof. Marion Koopmans gives 11th Loeffler Lecture in Greifswald
New infectious agents, especially those originally from animals, are great challenges to science and politics. This was made very clear once again by the COVID-19 pandemic that has just been overcome. But is there any chance at all of getting "ahead of the wave" in the case of emerging infectious diseases and preventing an epidemic from growing into a pandemic? This question has occupied Prof. Marion Koopmans for years. In this year's Loeffler Lecture on 3.July, she will shed light on opportunities and needs to detect and contain new infectious diseases at an early stage.
Marion Koopmans heads the Department of Viroscience at the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and the WHO Collaborating Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases. She is also Scientific director for emerging infectious diseases at the Netherlands Centre for One Health (NCOH) and the Pandemic and Disaster Preparedness Centre in Rotterdam/Delft, the Netherlands. During the Corona crisis, Koopmans was a member of the Outbreak Management Team in the Netherlands, that advised the national government on measures to contain the spread of SARS-CoV-2.
Emerging infections, with a particular focus on the pathway of diseases at the human-animal interface, are the focus of her research. Marion Koopmans is particularly committed to the creation of global networks for systematic and broad-based early detection and control.
