Pioneering open source software for air cargo released at ONE Record Hackathon

Dipl.-Kffr. Bettina von Janczewski Presse und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Fraunhofer-Institut für Materialfluss und Logistik IML

The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML announced the launch of NE:ONE, an innovative open-source ONE record server software for the air cargo community, at the ONE Record Hackathon in Seeheim on June 23, 2023. Developed within the Digital Testbed Air Cargo (DTAC) project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, NE:ONE is designed to facilitate the implementation of the IATA-ONE Record data sharing standard.

The launch of version 1.0 of NE:ONE took place at the start of the official “IATA ONE Record Hackathon”, hosted by Lufthansa Cargo from June 23 to June 25. Lufthansa Industry Solutions hosted instances of the NE:ONE server for each team, enabling an immediate and successful start to the practical application of ONE Record. The event saw the participation of three teams from Fraunhofer IML, Lufthansa Cargo, CHI Germany, and Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. These teams of the air cargo community, worked hard to develop innovative solutions using the ONE Record data standard.

The team NE:ONE Play, which included five scientists from the Aviation Logistics department, won the prestigious ONE Record award. Their solution enables effortless exploration, editing, and patching of ONE Record Linked Data, helping both developers and non-IT professionals get started and work with ONE Record.

“ONE Record is the future of data exchange for Lufthansa Cargo" and "NE:ONE is the right take-off point to get started with ONE Record.”
Dr. Christian Lehr, Senior Director Global Fulfillment Development at Lufthansa Cargo AG

The development and public launch of NE:ONE signifies a major breakthrough in DTACs persistent endeavors to digitize and streamline processes within the air cargo industry. As a freely available, open-source software, NE:ONE democratizes the participation in data exchange via ONE Record, leveling the playing field for all stakeholders in the air cargo community. By fully implementing ONE Record's API description and data model, NE:ONE not only makes it easier for companies to get started with ONE Record, but represents an entirely new industry approach to collaboratively develop and maintain open source base elements in air cargo.

While the first version of NE:ONE was developed by the partners of the Digital Testbed Air Cargo, from now on the Air Cargo Community will not only use the software, but also develop it further together. This ensures its continuous improvement and adaptation to the evolving needs of the air cargo industry. NE:ONE can be found in the repository of the Open Logistics Foundation under: https://git.openlogisticsfoundation.org/digital-air-cargo/ne-one

The air cargo community and other interested parties are invited to participate in the further development of NE:ONE.
