NUI 2022: District of Munich tops list for the fifth time in a row

Dr. Jutta Gröschl Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Institut für Mittelstandsforschung (IfM) Bonn

NUI Region Ranking by IfM Bonn shows where most new entrepreneurial initiatives are currently taking place

Since 2018, the district of Munich has been at the top of those districts and independent cities in which new businesses are most frequently founded or to which commercial enterprises are relocated. The cities of Leverkusen and Rosenheim follow in second and third place, with the district of Starnberg in fourth place.

As part of the “Neue Unternehmerische Initiative” (NUI) Region Ranking, the IfM Bonn annually determines how many full-time and part-time business startups, as well as takeovers and relocations of commercial enterprises, were newly registered in a region per 10,000 inhabitants of working age. Thus, to a lesser extent, the development of the working-age population can also impact the NUI ranking.

Significant changes for some areas in the NUI top 20 group
There were some shifts within the NUI top 20 group in 2022 compared with the previous year: While the counties of Lindau am Bodensee and Dahme-Spreewald, as well as the independent city of Aschaffenburg, were able to move up into the NUI top group, the counties of Nordfriesland, Marburg-Biedenkopf, Aichach-Friedberg, Augsburg and Rosenheim and the independent city of Schwabach were not able to remain among the top 20. The independent city of Baden-Baden, which had been in second place behind Munich in 2021, is now in 14th place. By contrast, the counties of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and Dachau and the independent city of Kempten (Allgäu) returned to the top group.

In total, ten districts and independent cities in Bavaria, four regions in Hesse, the cities of Düsseldorf and Leverkusen in North Rhine-Westphalia, the German capital Berlin, the independent city of Baden-Baden in Baden-Württemberg, and the districts of Dahme-Spreewald and Teltow-Fläming in Brandenburg are among the top twenty.

Despite the decline, Berlin remains the top
"In almost all federal states, the propensity to start a business – measured by the average of the districts – declined last year. However, this was most pronounced in the city-states of Hamburg and Berlin," reports IfM researcher Olga Suprinovič. Nevertheless, Berlin again achieved the highest NUI value. It was followed by Hesse, Hamburg and Bremen.
