It is the most important award for founders from the federal state of Bremen: start-up, WasteAnt, was awarded the “Gründerpreis 2023”, a prize for young businesses, for its AI-based technology that helps to recycle waste most efficiently. The prize is granted every year by Starthaus Bremen & Bremerhaven and Sparkasse Bremen and is endowed with 7,000 Euros. WasteAnt received the award during the Bremen start-up summit on June 22nd.
"We are very happy about this award and will continue to go full throttle to contribute to a more circular economy with waste quality analysis," was the first reaction from the team. Three of the founders, scientists Dr. Szymon Krupinski, Dr. Christian Müller and Dr. Arturo Gomez Chavez, met while studying at Constructor University in Bremen. WasteAnt also has its offices on the campus of the international university.
The start-up, founded in 2021, has developed a technology that is of particular interest to operators of waste incineration and sorting plants. A system of sensors, cameras and software based on artificial intelligence captures, verifies and characterizes waste streams around the clock. This enables greater efficiency in plant operations, improves incineration and thus electricity generation, and reduces emissions.
WasteAnt's pilot partner is local utility provider swb AG, which enables the team to conduct research under real-world conditions. Bremen's Aufbau-Bank provided funding for the team, which has already grown to 12 employees. As of late, WasteAnt is active beyond the Bremen area.
