Vom 20. bis zum 24. Juni 2004 organisiert der Greifswalder Professor für Wirtschafts-, Sozial- und Tourismusgeographie Dr. Wilhelm Steingrube eine in English gehaltene Konferenz "Recent Trends in Tourism: the Baltic and the World" in der neuen Universitätsbibliothek und im BioTechnikum. er schreibt dazu, angesichts einer schwierigen wirtschaftlichen Gesamtsituation gelte in den peripher gelegenen, ländlichen Regionen an der Ostsee der Tourismus vielfach als "Rettungsanker", der dringend benötigte Beschäftigungs- und Einkommenseffekte auslösen solle.
Die Konferenzthemen sind die aktuellen Trends im Nachhaltigen Tourismus, im Maritimen Tourismus, im Gesundheitstourismus, im Tourismus in Transformationsländern.
