EDEKA funds endowed professorship for sustainable purchasing and consumption behaviour at Leuphana

Henning Zuehlsdorff Pressestelle
Leuphana Universität Lüneburg

In order to strengthen sustainability research and knowledge transfer, EDEKA ZENTRALE Stiftung & Co. KG will fund a junior professorship for sustainable purchasing and consumption behaviour at Leuphana University Lüneburg from 2024. The funding for the endowed professorship is initially set for a period of six years. In addition, EDEKA is providing further funding for research.

As one of the leading companies in the food trade in Germany, EDEKA would like to make a contribution to the promotion of scientific knowledge for a sustainable development of society and improve the scientific exchange in this subject area both nationally and internationally with the establishment of the endowed professorship.

"Climate protection, biodiversity, resource conservation - we have been committed to more sustainable processes along the value chain for many years," says Claas Meineke, Member of the Board of EDEKA ZENTRALE Stiftung & Co. KG. "That is why we are now also promoting research on responsible consumption at the scientific level. Leuphana's profile convinces us because it brings great interdisciplinary competence with regard to sustainability and economic topics," Meineke contin-ues.

Leuphana President Sascha Spoun welcomes the commitment of the EDEKA headquarters: "The new professorship expands our possibilities to gain insights into sustainable purchasing and consumption behaviour and to make them fruitful for teaching."

    Considerable need for research recognisable

Every day, millions of people make their individual purchasing and consumption decisions at German supermarket shelves and service counters. "This is precisely where we see a considerable need for research and would like to promote science in order to show consumers even more diverse options for sustainable purchases in the future and thus get them excited about them in the long term," emphasises EDEKA board member Claas Meineke.

The initiators of the new endowed professorship and the cooperation between Leuphana and EDEKA are Professor Monika Imschloß and Professor Jacob Hörisch. Monika Imschloß, Professor of Business Administration, in particular Marketing, researches, among other things, sustainable consumer behaviour in retail contexts. Jacob Hörisch is an expert in sustainability economics. His research interests include sustainability management and sustainable consumption.
