Review Commons, a platform dedicated to the peer review of preprints, announces the expansion of its family of affiliate journals to include publications from three additional organizations. Affiliate journals accept the transfer of peer-reviewed preprints directly from the Review Commons online portal into their editorial workflow, where they are assessed for publication without restarting the peer review process.
Review Commons announces today that an additional seven journals are joining the consortium of affiliates:
• The FEBS Journal, FEBS Letters, FEBS Open Bio, and Molecular Oncology from FEBS
• GENETICS and G3: Genes|Genomes|Genetics from the Genetics Society of America (GSA)
• Open Biology from the Royal Society
These new additions bring the current count of affiliate journals ready to process submissions to 27*, which includes the Biochemical Journal, Immunology and Cell Biology, and Genome Biology who announced their commitment earlier in 2023. In addition, Genes & Development from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press has committed to join the Review Commons affiliate journals and will be technically integrated with the platform, allowing reviewed preprint submissions, in early 2024.
Sara Monaco, Managing Editor of Review Commons, welcomes the new affiliates: “Adding these journals and organizations to Review Commons gives authors even more opportunities to efficiently find the right home for their published research. We are also happy to see an increasing body of journals recognizing the value of reviewed preprints for efficient editorial decision-making.”
The increasing number of organizations joining the Review Commons affiliate journals also provides a forum for them to work together and harmonize plans for future developments. A total of 13 life sciences societies and organizations are now represented in Review Commons, providing a diversity of voices and ideas with a shared commitment to the project.
Representatives of the Review Commons affiliates meet on 4 December at Cell Bio 2023, the annual scientific conference of ASCB and EMBO, held this year in Boston, MA, USA. Thomas Lemberger, Review Commons Project Lead and Head of Open Science Implementation at EMBO, notes the potential of such interactions: “This meeting provides a blueprint for the kind of collaboration that Review Commons facilitates. We aim to identify shared interests among our affiliates in making the publishing process more efficient and reducing the burden of peer review on the community. We are excited to work together to advance Open Science by making the transparent peer review of preprints compatible with journal publication, maximizing the benefits for the research community.”

Review Commons is a platform for high-quality journal-independent peer-review of preprints in the life sciences. BioRxiv or medRxiv preprints reviewed by Review Commons can be transferred to 27 affiliated journals for editorial consideration without starting the peer review process afresh.
