The future of livestock research at the FBN: new focus, structure and appearance

The Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) presents itself with new focal points, a new organisation and a fresh presence

A new chapter is being opened at the FBN with the Livestock Forum: the long-established research institute is presenting a new research programme at the high-profile conference. Director Prof Dr Klaus Wimmers sums up: "Four years of intensive work lie behind us, during which we have put everything to the test. We have not only created a new structure, but above all identified new focal points in order to develop concepts for future livestock farming."

Four focus topics for more interdisciplinary research
Instead of six institutes, research at the FBN will be more interdisciplinary in future: in four focus areas in which scientists will jointly research the physiological and ethological abilities of animals as well as their interaction with the environment and the underlying regulatory and adaptive mechanisms. In this way, sustainable solutions and scientifically sound compromises can be derived that reflect animal welfare and health, efficient resource utilisation and the promotion of biodiversity.

    Holistic view on the animal
"In the four focus areas of individualising farm animal husbandry, farm animals in sustainable resource cycles, coping with critical life phases of farm animals and promoting diversity in animal farming, the focus is on the animal," explains Prof. Dr Klaus Wimmers. "Thanks to the increasingly interdisciplinary, dynamic approach, our scientists can bring together a wide variety of approaches in a joint project and thus enable a more holistic view on the farm animal, from the genome to behaviour, from nutrition to husbandry conditions. This not only enables us to work better together in terms of content, but also to utilise the resources at the FBN more efficiently. In the four focus areas, we have also enabled younger scientists to develop their careers and fill important positions at the FBN."

    New design emphasises future orientation
The changes at the Research Institute of Farm Animal Biology (FBN) will now also have an outward effect: a new logo, fresh colours and a revised website represent the future-oriented course of the research institute. "We are proud of our tradition and of what we have achieved," summarises Prof. Dr Klaus Wimmers. "But we are looking to the future and are looking forward to laying the scientific foundations for modern, sustainable agriculture that meets both the needs of animals and the requirements of society."
More information on the structural, scientific-organisational and visual reorientation of the FBN can be found on the institute's website at http://www.fbn-dummerstorf.de.

    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
