Innovative recycling solutions and advanced energy storage systems

Dr. Simone Kondruweit Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Fraunhofer-Institut für Schicht- und Oberflächentechnik IST

Since May 2024, the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST has been a member of REWIMET e.V., the recycling cluster for economically strategic metals. Within the framework of the new membership, the Fraunhofer IST will contribute not only its extensive expertise in the field of surface and coating technology but also its competencies in the area of sustainable energy storage and systems. The aim is to develop innovative solutions for the recycling and recovery of valuable metals whilst simultaneously improving the efficiency and sustainability of energy storage systems.

REWIMET e.V. is a network dedicated to the promotion of recycling technologies and the sustainable usage of raw materials. By becoming a member, the Fraunhofer IST is underlining its commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency, particularly in the region. In collaboration with other members of the cluster, mainly based in South-East Lower Saxony, the Fraunhofer IST will work on researching and developing new technologies that provide a contribution towards the optimization of recycling processes and the reduction of environmental pollution.

“Our particular focus lies on battery cell production and hydrogen technologies,” explained Prof. Dr. Sabrina Zellmer, Deputy Director of the Fraunhofer IST. “We see great potential here for the conservation of valuable resources and for taking a step towards a circular economy in collaboration with REWIMET e.V.”.

IST Institute Director Prof. Dr. Christoph Herrmann is also delighted about joining the cluster: “Membership offers us an excellent framework for developing sustainable, marketable technologies for efficient metal recycling in collaboration with leading companies, scientific institutions and public authorities, thereby providing a contribution towards the resolution of global challenges in the field of resource management and climate protection.”

The Fraunhofer IST not only contributes its expertise to technical developments, but also promotes the training and further education of specialists in the field of recycling and the circular economy. This contributes towards the long-term strengthening of expertise in these future-oriented areas and the transfer of innovative technologies into industrial practice.

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
