Counteracting educational injustice: Kick-off event of the international research project LINEup

Regina Thelen Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Pädagogische Hochschule Karlsruhe

On 20 September, researchers from six countries will come together at the Karlsruhe University of Education for the public kick-off event of LINEup. Participation in the programme of lectures and discussions on the topic of longitudinal data collection in education is free of charge.

How do educational inequalities arise and what can be done about them? In order to identify success factors for high-quality education for all, researchers from Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain have joined forces in the EU-funded research project LINEup (Longitudinal Data for Inequalities in Education). The international consortium of 13 institutions - including the Karlsruhe University of Education (KUE) - is mapping, analysing and collecting longitudinal data from 31 European countries in order to trace how educational inequalities arise over school careers in Europe and develop solutions to counteract them.

The members of LINEup will come together at the PHKA on Friday, 20 September for the kick-off event of the research project. The programme from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. includes presentations and discussions by and with researchers and experts from education administration, including representatives from the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories and the eduLIFE, LIFETRACK and PIONEERED research projects.

The public kick-off event offers the opportunity to learn how longitudinal data in the field of education is collected and used in Germany and other European countries and enables participants to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of such surveys. Participation is free of charge. The conference language is English. Registrations will be accepted until 5 September. The kick-off event is being organised by Prof. Dr. Martin Neugebauer, Professor of Educational Sociology at the PHKA. He is responsible for the German part of the LINEup research project. Further information on the event on 20 September is available at https://ph-ka.de/lineup-opening.

    About LINEup

LINEup aims to identify the key success factors for quality education for all. In an international consortium, existing longitudinal data of 6- to 18-year-old students in 31 European countries will be collected and analysed to better understand the emergence of educational inequalities in Europe. This quantitative approach will be complemented by qualitative research in the project countries to collect primary data on the influence of possible inequality-reducing measures. The focus will be on better understanding what schools can do to reduce inequalities in the short, medium and long term. LINEup is being funded by the European Union with around 2.8 million euros. The project will run for three years.
