Students from DHBW involved in ESA Academy research project on the effects of weightlessness on cognitive abilities

Carolin Salfner Hochschulkommunikation
Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg Lörrach DHBW

The two students on the Mechanical Engineering programme at DHBW Lörrach, Sebastian Schmidt from dual partner Sedus Stoll AG and Tim Dieterle from Wiha Werkzeuge GmbH, are taking part in a joint research project between the German Sport University Cologne, the University of Innsbruck, the Jožef Stefan Institute (Slovenia) and DHBW Lörrach as part of an ESA Academy (European Space Agency) project.

The research project involving the DHBW Lörrach and supervised in Lörrach by programme director Prof. Dr Daniel Stehle is called "NeurO2flight". NeurO2flight investigates the effects of hypoxia - i.e. the re-duced supply of oxygen to the brain - and weightlessness on cerebral blood flow, neurocognitive perfor-mance and the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms. Previous research has focussed on either weightlessness or a hypoxic state, but the combination of the two stressors is still unknown. The team wanted to find out whether crew members can maintain optimal performance under these conditions, which is important for the next generation of spacecraft and space colonisation.
The mechanical engineering students from DHBW Lörrach are part of the team responsible for the de-sign and construction of the test carrier, which they will use in parabolic flights at the beginning of No-vember. In Bordeaux, 31 parabolas will be flown with an Airbus A310 on each of three flight days. Each parabola includes approx. 22 seconds of weightlessness during which the tests will take place.
Key milestones in the construction and functional testing of the test carrier have already been successful-ly completed, meaning that the team is ready for a successful project conclusion in Bordeaux.

We will report further on the research project at the end of the year.

About “The ESA Academy experimentation programme“
The European Space Agency (ESA) Academy Experimentation Programme offers universities the oppor-tunity to design and develop experiments related to gravity and space. The ESA Academy's call for pa-pers at the beginning of the year was followed by numerous applications from universities across Europe. The shortlisted teams were invited to present their project to a panel of experts from ESA and its pro-gramme partners and answer the panel's questions on the scientific, technical and management aspects of their proposals. Seven teams were selected to take part in this cycle of the experimental programme - including the NeurO2flight team with students from DHBW Lörrach.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
