Privatdozent Dr. Rainer Ganschow, Klinik für Kinder- und Jugendmedizin des Universitätsklinikums Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), hat den mit 1000 Euro dotierten Paul-Caspar-Tyrell-Preis der Gesellschaft für Pädiatrische Gastroenterologie und Ernährung erhalten, der vom Verein Leberkrankes Kind gestiftet wurde. Die Auszeichnung wurde Dr. Ganschow für eine Arbeit zu Lebertransplantationen bei Kindern verliehen.
Ein Problem nach Lebertransplantationen ist die Neubildung von Lymphomen (bösartigen Tumoren). Ganschow hatte gezeigt, dass durch eine Therapie mit niedrig dosierten Immunsuppressiva (Medikamenten zur Unterdrückung des Immunsystems), wie sie am UKE praktiziert wird, die Lymphomrate deutlich gesenkt werden kann. Das UKE hat weltweit die niedrigste Lymphomrate nach Lebertransplantationen bei Kindern.
