The recently published ShanghaiRanking of academic subjects at the best universities worldwide once again confirms the dynamic development of Leuphana University Lüneburg. The university's political science program ranks in the 51–75 range in the global ranking. In Germany, Lüneburg's political science program ranks 4th. Only the universities of Konstanz, Mannheim and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich are better placed.
Professor Sarah Engler, who heads the Institute of Political Science at Leuphana, said of the success, which crowns 20 years of development work: "Our institute brings together researchers who previously worked at very different research institutions in Germany and Europe. These different perspectives create an ideal environment for research on democracies." The institute also plays a leading role in the collection and provision of data sets such as the World Value Survey or the Comparative Political Data Set, which are used by other scientists worldwide for their research.
In seven academic subjects in the ranking, Leuphana is among the top 500 worldwide. In Management, Leuphana is ranked fifth in Lower Saxony and 201–300 globally. In Environmental Science & Engineering, Leuphana is ranked 15th in Germany (301–400 globally). The rankings of the broader subject groups Ecology (worldwide rank 301-400), which means 25th place in Germany, and Business Administration, also worldwide in this group and 12th in Germany, confirm this. The two subjects Economics and Psychology, which are only offered in a specialized way in Lüneburg, each achieve the ranking group 401-500 despite absolute measurements that favor large, broad-based locations.
With the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2024, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy presents what it claims to be the most comprehensive and objective ranking of universities worldwide by subject. University performance is not ranked in relation to their size. This year's ranking includes rankings of universities in 55 subjects in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medicine and social sciences. More than 1,900 out of 5,000 universities from 96 countries and regions are included in the ranking.
The ranking takes into account a range of objective academic indicators and third-party data to measure the performance of universities worldwide in relevant subjects. International academic awards, academic excellence, research quality and international cooperation are also included in the assessment.
