One farewell and three firsts

MHH-Alumni e.V. bid farewell to 110 graduates of human medicine.

It was the 32nd graduation ceremony for human medicine for MHH-Alumni e.V., but a first for the new president, Professor Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner. More than 600 guests attended the ceremony in the cafeteria of the Hannover Medical School (MHH) on 11 January 2025. The focus was, of course, on the beaming young people who had successfully completed their studies at the MHH – but also, to a lesser extent, on the new MHH president. On the eleventh day of her term of office, 110 exam certificates were to be presented to the graduates.

But first things first: the Alumni Association's chairman, Professor Siegfried Piepenbrock, welcomed all the guests and congratulated the graduates on their licences to practice medicine. Dr Marion Renneberg, Vice President of the Lower Saxony Medical Association, also took the opportunity to offer her warmest congratulations to her new colleagues. In his speech, the Dean of Studies, Professor Ingo Just, paid particular tribute to the support of family and friends, without whom many a graduation would certainly not have been possible.

    Farewell with a confetti cannon

In their speeches, graduates Annemarie Fanny Müller and Carlos Oltmanns looked back on the past years at the MHH with particular appreciation and a twinkle in their eyes. On the one hand, there is great gratitude towards everyone who made their studies and exams possible, said Oltmanns. On the other hand, this gratitude also gives rise to a sense of responsibility to give something back, to do good work and to make a contribution to society. But the highlight of their speech was undoubtedly the confetti cannon that the two of them fired into the crowd – a first in the history of graduation ceremonies.

New President personally presents all exam certificates

Then the moment had come for President Professor Hilfiker-Kleiner to take the microphone. In her welcoming address, she praised the outstanding quality of teaching at the MHH, which she said was an inspiration to many other universities throughout Germany – not least due to the development of innovative teaching formats during the coronavirus pandemic. She presented the examination certificates and congratulated each graduate personally, while Professor Piepenbrock presented them with a red rose.

    A magnificent musical backdrop

The musical programme deserves a special mention, as it was simply magnificent. Among the graduates, there were three powerful singers who delighted the guests with their songs. Alicia Reitze and Nina Nienhaus gave the audience goosebumps with their rendition of ‘This Time’, while graduate Eluisa Sina and her band fired up the audience with R&B rhythms. Their interpretation of the Kool and the Gang song ‘Celebration’ literally swept the guests off their feet at the end of the event. They clapped and danced, rocking in their seats, thus securing a third ‘first time’ for the afternoon.

    MHH-Alumni e.V. has been active since 2000

The MHH Alumni Association was founded in 2000 and has since been committed to fostering a lively relationship between the Hannover Medical School and its former students and staff. In addition to organising the graduation ceremonies for human medicine, the association regularly organises practical courses for students and the series of events ‘Die MHH im Gespräch’ (in conversation with the MHH), in which interesting topics from the MHH are presented quarterly. In addition, the alumni association supports the MHH-Deutschlandstipendium (MHH-Germany Scholarship) and various smaller projects in teaching.

Further information about the association and more photos of the graduation ceremony can be found online at http://www.mhh-alumni.de.
