Prof. Dr. Arnd Garsuch, an expert from BASF SE in Ludwigshafen, has strengthened the Institute of Materials Chemistry at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg. As an honorary professor of technical electrochemistry, he will contribute his expertise to joint research projects and the further development of the courses on offer at the Senftenberg campus.
Only last year, the new Bachelor's degree programme in Naturel and Applied Sciences and the winter semester 2025/26 will see the start of the international Master's degree programme Chemistry: Materials, Engineering and Sustainability.
"Prof. Garsuch can effectively complement and strengthen the expertise available at the Institute of Materials Chemistry and also significantly intensify cooperation with the regional economy," says Prof. Dr Olaf Klepel, who heads both study programmes.
Arnd Garsuch, who studied chemistry at the University of Leipzig and obtained his doctorate, has been working at BASF for 15 years. He is currently a team leader in research in the field of technical electrochemistry.
His research activities include the recycling of lithium-ion batteries. "BASF SE has built a pilot plant for this in Schwarzheide," reports the scientist. "There is therefore an intensive dialogue between the different teams at BASF SE in Ludwigshafen and BASF Schwarzheide GmbH. Prof. Jörg Acker is conducting research at BTU in the field of battery recycling, and the geographical proximity of BTU and BASF Schwarzheide naturally brings researchers together very easily and quickly."
Involving students in projects
The complementary expertise and geographical proximity of BTU and BASF make it very easy to find points of contact and possible collaborations. For example, students have the opportunity to write qualification and final theses as part of research projects. One outstanding example of this collaboration is ReLIB - one of the four selected projects in the BTU - HU Berlin innovation corridor, which deals with the recycling of used lithium-ion batteries.
Focus on electrochemistry
"At BTU, the aim is to develop and expand the chair of electrochemistry in particular in close cooperation with the university," emphasises Prof. Garsuch. "Due to the practical relevance to the chemical industry, business aspects will also be considered and analysed in addition to technical and scientific focal points. The link between theory and practice will be a key aspect of the programme. Students should gain insights into the possible scaling of production plants and the economic efficiency of processes in the chemical industry and be involved in research activities."
The expert from BASF also sees the interaction with students and the transfer of experience and specialist knowledge as a great personal enrichment: "The discussions and collaboration with young researchers provide new impetus and ideas for future and existing research topics."
The challenge of climate change
"We want to offer interesting study programmes at BTU and inspire the next generations of scientists for the challenges and tasks ahead," explains Prof. Garsuch. These include, above all, climate change and the associated avoidance of CO₂ emissions. Electrochemistry can and should make a decisive contribution here."
