Making Individual Fitness Goals Visible with AI

Rainer Krauß Hochschulkommunikation

Hof/Bayreuth – The Intelligent and Learning Systems research group at the Institute for Information Systems (iisys) at Hof University has developed an innovative, AI-powered fitness tool in collaboration with the "Freiraum" gym in Bayreuth. The subproject "Fit Me" was created as part of the EU-funded EFRE project M4-SKI and is now being made available to the public.

The project, which ran for seven months last year, enables athletes to visualize their individual fitness goals with the help of artificial intelligence. "Through a demonstrator, users can upload a photo of themselves, select their preferred type and intensity of training, and receive an AI-generated preview of their future, fitter self—essentially allowing them to take a glimpse into the future," explains Prof. Dr. Christian Groth, expert in Applied Artificial Intelligence at Hof University. The generated training plan can then be discussed with trainers at the collaborating gym and customized individually.

    Technological Innovation for Greater Motivation
Many people struggle to stay motivated in the long run when it comes to exercising. The demonstrator tackles this issue by providing a tangible visualization of personal training goals through realistic, AI-powered image manipulation. The software is based on state-of-the-art image recognition and neural networks, which have been fine-tuned to meet the project's specific requirements. "The challenge was to ensure the realism of the generated images, as many pre-trained diffusion algorithms tend to create exaggerated or unrealistic representations," says project team member Jonas Kemnitzer. The correlation between the images and the training plans was also carefully optimized.

    Difference from Conventional Applications
Unlike common mobile filters that typically make only superficial changes, the AI behind "Fit Me" specifically analyzes body structures and adapts them based on scientifically validated training processes. Furthermore, the system processes all data exclusively on the servers of the AI Application Center, without storing any personal information. Users can be assured that their data will not be saved or reused.

    Ready for Use
After an intensive development and testing phase, the demonstrator is now officially live and available online for anyone interested. Access is provided through the "Freiraum" gym, located at Spinnereistraße 7, 95445 Bayreuth, under the management of CEO Max Mühlbauer.
The project is part of the EU-funded M4-SKI initiative and was realized with the support of the European Union.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
