Max Planck Society honours Professor for Environmental Genomics for her successful commitment to the cooperation between Kiel University and the MPI for Evolutionary Biology
With over 80 research institutes, the Max Planck Society (MPG) is one of the leading institutions for basic research in Germany. It regularly appoints university professors with its Max Planck Fellowship, which aims to attract excellent researchers for closer cooperation between a university and a Max Planck Institute.
The MPG has now re-appointed Eva Stukenbrock, Professor of Environmental Genomics at Kiel University, as a Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön (MPI-EvolBio). This is the third time she has been awarded this special honour, which recognises her scientific successes, her commitment to networking and promoting plant research in the region and her continued efforts towards fruitful cooperation between Kiel University and MPI-EB.
“Eva Stukenbrock's excellent research on the relationships between plants and microorganisms, their underlying evolutionary genomics and future applications in sustainable plant protection exemplify the value of basic research: with her work, she creates well-founded approaches to solving current social challenges such as maintaining food security. In addition, Eva Stukenbrock extends the research areas in our institute to the evolution of plants in their ecosystem of microorganisms and pathogens,” emphasises Professor Arne Traulsen, Managing Director of the MPI-EvolBio.
“Eva Stukenbrock has been making a significant contribution to global sustainability goals for many years with her pioneering research into the interactions between pathogenic fungi and crop plants. Numerous awards and memberships in international scientific academies underline her outstanding achievements in areas such as environmental genomics and evolutionary biology. Many of the current issues can only be dealt with efficiently in interdisciplinary co-operation. Close and fruitful contact with non-university partner institutions such as the MPI in Plön is essential for this. For years, Mrs Stukenbrock has made a decisive contribution to intensifying the networking of plant researchers in the region. We are delighted that this commitment has once again been recognised and honoured by the Max Planck Society and congratulate Ms Stukenbrock on the continuation of her fellowship,” emphasises Kiel University’s Vice President for Research, Professor Eckhard Quandt.
Plant researchers in the Kiel region join forces
In recent years, Eva Stukenbrock, together with colleagues in the “Kiel Plant Center” (KPC), has succeeded in deepening cooperation between plant researchers in the Kiel region. For example, Stukenbrock has recently been able to acquire the DFG-funded research group “PlantsCoChallenge”. She is also well connected internationally, being a fellow at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), member of the Académie des Sciences in Paris and an extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
Thanks to her renewed appointment, the evolutionary biologist will continue her Max Planck Fellow Group “Environmental Genomics” at the Institute in Plön. In cooperation with her working group at Kiel University, her research is focused on the mutual adaptations of microorganisms, plant host organisms and their environment. As a model system, the researchers in her group use the plant pathogenic fungus Zymoseptoria tritici and related species to investigate the molecular mechanisms for adaptive evolution and diversification. A more precise knowledge of the adaptations of harmful fungi to various crops and the associated evolution of resistance to pesticides is particularly relevant for crop protection. The overarching aim of the research group at the intersection of the Kiel Plant Center, Kiel University and MPI-EvolBio is to develop sustainable plant protection strategies based on knowledge of the mutual evolutionary adaptation of pests and plants.
About the Max Planck Fellowship:
The programme promotes collaboration between outstanding university lecturers and scientists from the Max Planck Society. The appointment of university teachers as Max Planck Fellows is limited to five years and is also linked to the management of a small working group at a Max Planck Institute. A total of over 40 Fellows are currently active at the Max Planck Institutes.
