MHH offers new Master's programme

Master's in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy starts in the coming winter semester.

Hannover Medical School (MHH) is offering a Master's degree programme in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy for the first time from the coming winter semester (WS 2025/2026). 20 students will be able to acquire the knowledge and skills to diagnose, treat and research mental disorders. The university is thus expanding its range of courses to include a sixth Master's degree programme alongside Biochemistry, Biomedicine, Biomedical Data Science, Public Health and Infectious Diseases and One Health and, in addition to the two main medical degree programmes, is leading students to state accreditation, the licence to practise medicine, in a further medical profession

What is special about the new Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy degree programme at MHH is that students receive a very practice-oriented course of study from the outset and not only complete all practical work placements in the outpatient and inpatient sector, but also get to know all clinical areas in which psychotherapists can work during their studies. The rather small degree programme with 20 students also results in a very good supervision ratio.

Cooperation between two MHH clinics in the new Master's programme

Another special feature of this new Master's programme is that two clinics have joined forces. MHH Clinic for Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy, headed by Professor Martina de Zwaan, and MHH Clinic for Psychiatry, Social Psychiatry and Psychotherapy , headed by Professor Stefan Bleich, have jointly implemented the course using their own funds. The degree programme builds on decades of experience in the training of psychotherapists in MHH's psychiatric clinic facilities and thus represents a consistent further development in the context of legal changes and the increasing demand for care.

"We are pooling our training expertise and clinical experience in clinical psychology and psychotherapy and offering our students an all-inclusive programme: from teaching and practical inpatient and outpatient experience to insights into research and, following their studies, even a possible doctorate and further training to become a specialist psychotherapist," emphasises Professor Gregor Szycik, MHH Clinic for Psychiatry, Social Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, who is jointly responsible for teaching with Professor Tanja Zimmermann, MHH Clinic for Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy. "We are very pleased to finally be able to offer this degree programme in Hanover after years of preparation and planning," says Professor Zimmermann. Of course, the two lecturers are also interested in training the next generation to meet the needs of both university hospitals. The idea for the new Master's programme at MHH was born as a result of the reform of the Psychotherapists Act and the transfer of training to become a psychotherapist into a direct study programme. "We simply wanted to train our students ourselves," explains Professor Zimmermann

Further information about the new Master's programme in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy is available on MHH website at http://www.mhh.de/master-psychotherapie and from the two programme coordinators Carolin Maschke and Angelina Vasileva-Dettmer, e-mail Master.Psychotherapie@mh-hannover.de.
