Constant optimization of materials and products made from polyolefin recyclates for sustainable solutions

Anke Zeidler-Finsel Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Fraunhofer-Institut für Betriebsfestigkeit und Systemzuverlässigkeit LBF

To ensure the quality of recyclates, the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF is planning a new joint research project with partners from industry to optimize polyolefin recyclates for sustainable solutions. New analytical methods and user-friendly evaluation strategies should enable cost-efficient quality control and improvement of recycling processes. The project promotes the transformation to a circular economy and invites partners to collaborate. More information will be provided in a free online seminar on May 6, 2025.

National and international regulations require the use of post-consumer recyclates (PCR), which necessitates a move away from linear value creation towards closed loops. This transformation offers new opportunities but also poses challenges for the plastics industry.

Reliable use of polyolefin recyclates through simple evaluation strategies

Consistent quality in polyolefin recyclates is crucial for the plastics industry, especially in view of the requirements for Sustainability and resource efficiency. The new joint research project "Polyolefin recyclates" will show whether and which material streams can be developed for the reliable production of qualitatively satisfactory polyolefin recyclates through cost-efficient, fast and reliable analysis as well as uncomplicated additivation and processing strategies.

A key objective here is the cost-efficient quality control of input materials. Established analysis methods such as rheometry, oxygen induction time (OIT), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) are used to detect quality fluctuations at an early stage. A constant quality of the polyolefin recyclates is to be achieved through targeted blending of qualitatively different recyclates from different sources.

User-friendly evaluation strategies and innovative analysis methods make an important contribution to the circular economy and support compounders, plastics processors and users along the entire value chain to optimize them to better understand specific challenges and derive targeted measures.

In an industrial joint research project, several partners work together to implement scientific findings in a demand-oriented manner and close the gap between basic research and industrial development. We invite interested partners to jointly create an innovative platform to develop concrete solutions for the challenges of the plastics industry.

Fraunhofer LBF is offering a free workshop to introduce interested parties to the topic of "Polyolefin recyclates" - challenges and potentials.
