Together with 23 other European partners, HSBA, through the Hamburg Maritime Institute headed by Prof. Dr. Max Johns, is participating in the EU research project SeaAhead, which was just kicked off in Athens at the end of April. With a budget of €4 million and a duration of 48 months, the project, which is funded by the EU's Erasmus+ program, aims to advance maritime education through innovation, focusing on state-of-the-art technologies such as extended reality (XR). The project is thus timely, coming at a time when Europe urgently needs to become more independent strategically and industrially.
The maritime sector is undergoing remarkable changes due to increasing environmental regulations and technological advances. This requires an adjustment of skills, as the gap between existing and desired skill levels is growing, particularly in the areas of environment and technology. The overall goal of the EU project SeaAhead is to create Centers of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs) that bring together experts from education, research, and industry. This will strengthen innovation to ensure the growth, competitiveness, and future viability of the industry.
On behalf of HSBA, the project is supervised by Prof. Dr. Max Johns. He is an expert in maritime management and was involved in four work packages of the EU research project SkillSea on behalf of HSBA from 2018 to 2023. He also heads the Hamburg Maritime Institute at HSBA, which is one of the founding members of MET-NET (Maritime Education and Training Network).
"Participating in the EU SeaAhead project is the logical next step for us, as the project builds on the foundation laid by SkillSea. As a dual business school in Hamburg, we are familiar with the problems and needs of the maritime sector and look forward to contributing our research and teaching expertise to this important project,” explains Prof. Dr. Johns. ‘MET-NET was an important start; now it's time to further develop the methods, integrate state-of-the-art technologies such as extended reality (XR), and establish further competence partnerships.’
In addition to HSBA, other universities from Greece, Denmark, Ireland, Romania, France, and Spain, as well as companies from the maritime industry, are involved in the project. The project is supported by a total of 24 partner organizations from seven European countries, with each regional/national partnership reflecting the maritime clusters existing in the respective regions.
The HSBA is participating in work packages 2 (Enhancing Collaboration: transforming MET-NET and creation of Skills Partnerships at a Regional and EU level), 3 (Design of a Role Model of a Maritime CoVE) and 4 (Deploying Maritima CoVEs).
