High-performance, environmentally stable infrared optics are essential for modern applications in analytics, security and aerospace. At LASER World of Photonics 2025, the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST will be presenting newly developed coating solutions that offer maximum precision and long-term stability – even under extreme conditions.
The trade-fair presentation will focus on topics that include anti-reflective coatings alongside beam splitters for the medium- and long-wave infrared range up to a wavelength of 14 µm. The coatings are produced by means of advanced sputtering technology and are characterized by a very high density and exceptional environmental stability. They are crucial for the performance capabilities of modern infrared filters and optics in spectroscopy and imaging. “Our coatings offer not only the utmost optical performance, but also exceptional stability under extreme environmental conditions,” explained Dr. Philipp Farr, Group Leader Precision Optical Coatings at the Fraunhofer IST. Particularly worth emphasizing is the possibility of reliably processing even demanding materials such as metal fluorides – a decisive advantage for applications in the high-tech sector.
With more than 15 years of experience in the development and process control of optical coatings, the Fraunhofer IST ranks among the leading institutions in this field. For some time now, the different variants of magnetron sputtering have been successfully utilized for, amongst other things, the production of electrical and optical functional coatings. Furthermore, they offer great potential for future applications – for example in chemical analysis, environmental and remote monitoring, aerospace, and defense technology.
Visitors to LASER 2025 are warmly invited to stop by at the Fraunhofer joint stand in Hall A2, Stand 415 in order to speak to the experts and obtain first-hand information regarding the latest developments
