University of Regensburg improves further in new QS World University Ranking

Bastian Schmidt Präsidialabteilung, Bereich Kommunikation & Marketing
Universität Regensburg

Significant rise in research and sustainability

The University of Regensburg has clearly improved its position in the QS World University Ranking 2026 and is now ranked 691st worldwide - a rise of 50 places compared to the two previous years (ranking group 741-750). Nationally, the UR climbed to 38th place and thus also improved in the German comparison.
“The ranking result illustrates once more the impressive development of the University of Regensburg and is an important recognition of the research strength and reputation of our university. I am also particularly pleased that our strategic measures in the area of sustainability are reflected in the ranking," emphasizes University President Professor Dr. Udo Hebel.
The ranking is one of the most important international rankings for universities worldwide and is based on five main indicators, which take into account research performance, academic and professional reputation, global networking and sustainability. For the 2026 edition of the World University Rankings, 8,467 institutions worldwide were analyzed - 1,501 made it into the final ranking.
The University of Regensburg was able to improve in almost all indicators. Particularly noteworthy is the “sustainability” indicator, in which a significant leap was achieved. Significant gains were also recorded for the research indicator - for example in the number of citations and academic reputation. Further progress was also made in global networking, where the “International Research Network”, for example, received a better rating than in previous years.
The results are based, among other things, on bibliometric data from over 19.8 million recorded specialist publications, 200 million recorded citations and a total of about 1.5 million nominations from academics as well as about 520,000 nominations from employers. Furthermore, various data can be reported to QS by the respective institutions.
Specific measures taken by the University of Regensburg, such as the adoption of the Sustainability Strategy 2023-2027 and the establishment of strategic partnerships, resulted in positive developments in various indicators of the QS ranking. In this way, the University of Regensburg can continue to successfully pursue its development path in the future.
